What bedding is best for my Hamster
Choosing the right type of bedding for your hamsters may at first seem like a fairly straightforward matter. However, safety concerns have arisen in recent years over potential harmful effects of certain types of hamsters bedding. There are several bedding material options available, the most common being wood shavings, we also carry bedding from CareFresh and Kaytee which is pine and cedar free. Avoid cedar shavings!! It contains phenols that have been linked to liver and respiratory problems in hamsters. Pine shavings are not as dangerous as cedar, but can cause allergic reactions in some hamsters. If you do want to use pine shavings it’s a good idea to get the kiln-dried variety. Sawdust is another option, but it is not recommended as it is too fine and can cause sneezing and irritation in your hamster.

Your best choice for bedding material is wood shavings made from Aspen, or small animal litter made from wood pulp. Do not give your hamster pieces of material like towels or small blankets for bedding material as this will also cause problems if eaten by the hamster as it will not dissolve in the stomach and may cause a blockage. The cage should be cleaned out at least twice a week. Do not use newspaper to line the cage as this can be chewed and the ink can poison the hamster. After all, your pet is going to be living with you for up to 5 years, during this time you need to provide a safe and confortable home.
